Top 10 Brutalist Utopias in World Architecture
Brutalist architecture, characterized by its raw concrete and imposing forms, has long been a polarizing style in the world of design. Emerging in the post-war era, Brutalism is often seen as a symbol of resilience and practicality, with structures ranging from schools and churches to government buildings and repurposed industrial sites. Despite its controversial nature, Brutalism’s distinctive aesthetic continues to make a bold statement in cityscapes around the world.
A key figure in the development of Brutalism was Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school in 1919. His revolutionary approach to combining architecture, art, and design laid the groundwork for what would become the Brutalist movement. His vision of futuristic, utopian urban landscapes was later embraced by architects in the mid-20th century, who sought to create functional and impactful spaces through the use of concrete and minimalist design.
In this edition, Parametric Architecture explores the Top 10 Brutalist Buildings, showcasing some of the most iconic examples of the style.
