Stairway to Heaven

A Staircase That Dissolves Into the Sky at China’s Fuxi Mountain

Dear PA reader,

Architecture often reveals itself in how it moves people, frames daily life, and settles into its surroundings, and this week’s projects reflect that quiet intelligence across scales and geographies. Hong Kong unveiled plans for a 400-metre-long groundscraper on the Central Harbourfront. Snøhetta is one of the two shortlisted teams participating in Bane NOR’s design competition. The studio proposes a transformative development on a riverside site just north of the newly renewed Drammen Station and its striking new bridge.

Amid the rush of new development along the Qiantang River, Snøhetta’s proposal for the Hangzhou Art Museum stands out by slowing the scene down. Kéré Architecture’s cultural center draws on climate-responsive design and local materials to support everyday community use, and in Iran, the Ernan Boutique Hotel by Kalbod Studio uses light, material restraint, and careful planning to create a calm architectural pause in the desert.
