Rewriting Architecture Through Time Systems
Explore how time, systems, heritage, and climate are reshaping design thinking
Dear PA reader,
As architecture moves through layers of history and change, in Rome, STARTT designs a new access behind the Pantheon, where ancient structure is read as a sequence of micro-architectures instead of a fixed monument. Additionally, Agra’s eight historic landmarks reframe the city as a layered timeline, shifting focus from singular icon to accumulated heritage.
At the level of systems, buildings are increasingly operating as cycles. Modern rainwater harvesting turns architecture into active infrastructure, while in Brooklyn, Green-Wood Cemetery’s restored Victorian greenhouse becomes a public welcome center that blends memory, landscape, and civic use in one continuous space.
The profession itself is also under pressure to evolve. The idea of an “Architecture 1929 moment” suggests a split path: traditional practice on one side, and a second track shaped by climate, research, and system thinking on the other. Miami’s, Anantara’s first U.S. hotel reflects this shift through hospitality defined by atmosphere and experience.
In Milan, design turns soft and sensory. Kengo Kuma and Jaipur Rugs explore textile as structure, while Lina Ghotmeh’s Pink Labyrinth transforms movement into spatial memory. Across all projects, architecture is built through time, systems, and perception.
