Liquid Trees
Serbia’s algae-based solution to urban air pollution
Dear PA reader,
A new “liquid tree” bioreactor uses fast-growing microalgae to absorb CO₂ and release oxygen in dense urban areas where traditional trees can’t survive, offering a compact, efficient way to clean polluted city air. As winter descends on Europe, historic city squares come alive with twinkling Christmas markets where sparkling lights, festive music, and the scent of mulled wine mingle with centuries-old architecture.
Design excellence takes center stage in Miami Beach as the World Architecture Festival announced its first slate of winners, spanning projects from a community church in Spain to an inventive housing complex in Los Angeles.
Back in Spain, an ambitious stadium renovation in Gran Canaria, fittingly nicknamed “La Nube” (The Cloud), will wrap the island’s main football arena in a billowing high-tech canopy and boost its capacity, reinventing it as a sustainable 21st-century coliseum ahead of the 2030 World Cup. And in China, Bjarke Ingels Group’s nearly complete Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art unfurls as a network of twelve pavilions beneath a flowing ribbon-like roof, a bold new cultural landmark that reinterprets Suzhou’s classical garden heritage.
