First-Ever Copenhagen Architecture Biennial
A season of biennials unfolds, from Copenhagen to Venice, spotlighting architecture’s shifting priorities.
Dear PA reader,
Every biennial is less a showcase than a question posed to the world: How should we live, build, and imagine together? This year, from Copenhagen’s plea to slow down to Istanbul’s parable of the three-legged cat, architecture’s stages transform into mirrors of urgency and possibility, reminding us that the pace of construction is also the pace of culture itself.
Copenhagen launches its first Architecture Biennial, a city-wide stage under the theme “Slow Down”, turning from speed to longevity with over 250 events across Denmark and Malmö.
In Istanbul, the 18th Biennial opens under the theme “The Three-Legged Cat”, curated by Christine Tohmé, stretching art and architecture into shared territory.
Back in Venice, the 3D-printed Diamanti Bridge debuts across the Venetian lagoon. Nearby, a delicate Chinese paper umbrella pavilion contrasts fragility with endurance, while Bahrain’s Pavilion earns the Golden Lion for its meditation on land, sea, and survival.
And from Bjarke Ingels Group, “Ancient Future” combines Bhutanese hand-carving with robotic fabrication, offering a glimpse into how tradition and technology can jointly shape the architecture of tomorrow.
