Founded in Chicago in 1936 by architects Louis Skidmore and Nathaniel Owings, together with engineer John O. Merrill, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) quickly established itself as a leader in modern architecture.

The firm has since shaped some of the world’s most recognizable skylines, from New York’s Lever House, the city’s first glass-and-steel office building, to Chicago’s Willis Tower and John Hancock Center, and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. SOM’s work spans commercial towers, cultural institutions, airports, and large-scale urban masterplans.
